Cameras

Andy now shoots with the Sony system, which he has since 2024 and is loving his return to full frame and all the benefits it provides.

Believe it or not Andy actually owns very little kit! After a mega clearout of everything he has accumulated over a long career he know owns 2 A1 Mark 2 bodies, a 24-70mm 2.8, a 70-200mm f2.8 and the workhorse 200-600mm lens. He occasionally borrows a 600mm f4 when the need arises and is currently evaluating a 300mm f2.8 to add to his kit. That’s all, not much for a pro, but it’s all Andy needs with the kind of work he does.

Whilst Andy believes that it is the photographer that makes the image he admits that using the Sony A1 Mark II makes his challenging job a lot easier and he trusts the system completely. The video opposite is a slideshow of my favourite images from around the world after my first 6 months with the Sony system, play and enjoy!!

Here are some videos from Andy’s YouTube channel on his use of the Sony system

Flexshooter

Andy is very much a stalking and hand-holding kind of photographer but when he’s working in a hide or somewhere that he needs long term support he always uses a Flexshooter tripod head.

As a Flexshooter evangelist he has been involved with this amazing head since it’s very inception. These incredibly small yet powerful heads, allow Andy to shoot in a level environment with the head holding even his heaviest kid like it was weightless. There is no camera flopping over, his lens held where he left it and he can move it quickly with a fingertip. Suitable for any camera combo from the widest angle to the longest telephoto, this compact powerhouse weight just 600g and is perfect for all his adventures.

He uses the head, and the Twinshooter (both shown below) when he needs extra support without compromising flexibility.

You can purchase Flexshooter heads directly from our UK online store here.

Rucksacks

Carrying his kit safely is a very important consideration for Andy, it’s expensive and he cannot afford to replace it as all his money goes on his disco dancing lessons!

Therefore he needs a rucksack to be tough yet discrete as he doesn’t want to stand out as a photographer, plus it must do two jobs - transferring his kit safely to a location then being really useful when he gets there.

He has used the Vanguard Alta Sky range of rucksacks exclusively for the past year and loves them as they are indeed discrete and tough but their top loading design makes accessing fully assembled cameras in the field a breeze.

On his YouTube channel there is a review of the two rucksacks that he uses so click on the link shown and have a look!
