Fieldcraft Theory Workshop @ UGLAM

Introduction

Come along and learn from one of the best fieldcraft experts in the business in this fun, educational and inspirational workshop. You’ve seen Andy’s multi award winning images over the years, well most are achieved using his fieldcraft experience and sneakiness at getting closer to wildlife. As an added bonus there is an anonymous competition for the best image to a set theme, with the best 10 images being critiqued on screen. A great day for anyone interested in getting better wildlife pictures.

A Shorter Format

For some time we have been receiving requests to run shorter workshops as our clients can only spare a few hours at a time. So we are pleased to introduce a theory only workshop, which retains the same content as the original workshops, just without the practical element.
There will be no lunch either, no tea or coffee, just pure photographic inspiration from Andy Rouse. Of course we will still offer the longer workshops at the BWC with the practical afternoons, more will be announced in time.

The extra benefit of this "lite" workshop of course is that there are much fewer costs and so we can offer it at a reduced rate; hopefully this means that more of you can benefit from Andy’s expertise. As part of Andy’s involvement with the Natural History degree course at the University of Glamorgan he has generously been allowed use of their lecture theatre for these events. He is very glad therefore to support photographers in Wales, the country that he now calls home. Of course fellow English photographers are very welcome, you will be given a pronunciation test for "Machynlleth" on entry!

Fieldcraft Workshop Contents

Wildlife photography is becoming more popular by the day with more and more amateur photographers wanting to become connected with the natural world. Andy can see why, as wildlife photography can be very relaxing and generates a wonderful appreciation of the world around us. The problem with wildlife photography is that it can be very difficult and confusing to know where to start, where to go and what to do. This is the goal of this workshop, to give the beginner a headstart with the basics that you need to know to get started and get wildlife images that you will be proud of.

The key to great wildlife photograph is fieldcraft. You can have all the latest gear, but without good fieldcraft your images will not not do it justice. During this workshop you will learn about where to look for wildlife, how to approach it by using fieldcraft, using hides and camouflage and how to get the best results from your camera. All of these will be illustrated throughout with Andy’s multi award winning images and he will illustrate all ideas with practical case studies; you’ll learn how he thinks about photographing something new and how he always put the wildlife first.

For example he will talks about how he stalks deer, how he sets up hides for garden birds, how to get kingfishers eating out of your hand and how to use a car as a hide. Case studies will include his incredible osprey pictures, black grouse and many others.

The workshop will also look at ethics too which is usually overlooked but very important to Andy. This will not be a technical day so please do not expect to be taught Photoshop or exposure in depth, although Andy will be explaining his images in a technical way to everyone present.

The duration of the workshop will be 4 hours.

The Competition

Andy is a great believer in getting photographers to be proud of and show their images. So he will be setting a competition with a theme to all delegates, you will be sent details of where to upload your image on booking the workshop. Their will be fun prizes for the top 3 images and the top 10 will get critiques on the big screen. All uploads and critiques will be anonymous, except for the top 3 for obvious reasons. It’s fun and Andy is really positive with his critiques.

Cost & Location

The cost is a very reasonable £30 per delegate. When you book your place you will receive an email confirmation together with full instructions for the day including location / parking etc. You must bring this confirmation with you on the day otherwise you will be refused entry.

The location will be at the University of Glamorgan campus at Pontypridd. It’s just of the A470, 10 minutes from the junction with the M4 and has ample free parking for everyone. The facilities are excellent with a modern lecture theatre, ensuring a professional day for all.
