Owl Workshop with Andy Rouse or Andrew James

Andy Rouse Wildlife Photography Ltd is proud to present fantastic Owl Workshops at the British Wildlife Centre. Andy has been running them successfully for 3 years now but has an an increasingly busy schedule and cannot do enough dates to satisfy demand. Therefore Andy
is pleased to welcome fellow photographer, mentor and the former Editor-in-Chief of top UK magazine, Practical Photography, Andrew James to run Owl Workshops too (but in his own style). So now you get the choice of two great professional photographers / mentors to lead your workshop.

On the workshop, you will spend upto 5 hours of photography at the best times of the day for light (all day in Winter). All owl locations will be natural for the special and species will include Tawny Owl (flying and general portraits), Long Eared Owl, Short Eared Owl, Little Owl and Barn Owl (flying and portraits). For special request we may bring along the Snowy Owl and European Eagle Owl too. You will get great, up close and personal natural looking portraits of all of these wonderful owls, plus some flying action too. Trust us you will fill a lot of GB during the day. Here's some images that we have taken recently:

Of course anyone can run workshops like this (and so many try to), the difference with us is that you will be continuously mentored by professional photographers with a proven pedigree. All the time you will be under our guidance with constant suggestions on technique / composition and how to make the most from your day. We will help you setup your cameras, answer the most basic questions with a smile and ensure that your photography improves as a result.

It's a perfect day for anyone interested in improving their photography and spending time with owls.

Why one of our workshops?

Like we said before, it's much more than just putting an owl on a perch. We use unique locations in a very natural setting, will teach you all forms of using light (including backlight, which we both love to shoot) and will help you to get more familar with your camera. We are experts at what we do and decent guys as well.

Who do I choose?

On a practical level both have a wealth of experience in the world of photography:

Andy's workshops are run with his normal "larger than life" style, building on his years of experience and position as one of the world's leading wildlife photographers. Every workshop that he runs is slightly different, taking advantage of any conditions that present themselves and he will certainly expand your photographic knowledge and horizons.

Andrew's workshops have a slightly different focus, which draws from his wealth of experience working across multiple genres of photography and his mentoring skills built up over many years working as the editor of the UK's top photographic magazine. He is an extremely competent photographer / mentor and will suit those wishing to return after previously attending Andy's workshop as the owls will be positioned in slightly different locations. He will be working with everyone very closely on technique, suggesting alternative compositions and viewpoints. Click here to read about Andrew's experience and his views on photography.

Since both operate under the umbrella of Andy Rouse Wildlife Photography Workshops Ltd, you can be assured that you are getting the very best in the business to help you improve your photography.

During the Spring and Summer months our Owl Workshops will start mid-late afternoon to ensure that you have the best light. In the Autumn they will start 1.30-2pm and in Winter around 11am. You will be informed of the exact start time, camera gear and everything you need to know on booking.

Since we are dealing with captive owls you will not need a long telephoto. A lens in the range of 300mm will be perfectly sufficient, so either a 100-400, 300mm fixed or a 70-200 with a 1.4x teleconverter. You will need wellingtons, that is for sure!
